Our organization, Ethiopian Muslims Legal-Professionals Association (EMLA), was conceived in the year 2015 G.C by a small group of Muslim lawyers with the shared value of giving-back to their community. It has been in close connection and services of Muslim organizations and individuals assisting in legal matters related to Islamic and Muslim issues individually, collectively and as a civic society organization. Fueled by the alarming rise in the abuse of power, discrimination and Islamophobic attacks from individuals and organizations as well as state officials, a larger and more diverse spectrum of lawyers recently came together to set up our organization as an official Ethiopian Muslims Legal-Professionals Association. Accordingly, EMLA gained its legal personality by registering with the Ethiopian Islamic Affairs Islamic Supreme Council (EIASC) under license no. 100/68/17 to address the legal challenges faced by Ethiopian Muslim communities and to ensure equal protection under the law not only for our Muslim community but also for all Ethiopians. We primarily engage in research based public advocacy, strategic litigation, and legal representation of Islamic institutions and individuals with legal issues impacting our Ummah. We are also highly dedicated to establish and run legal research and publications center, an alternative dispute resolution forum (Arbitration Center) and a training and awareness creation think-tank group as part of our wider plan to serve our Ummah using our profession.

We have a nine (9) member Board of Directors and an Executive Director, who are backed by an estimated 400 of our nation’s legal scholars, attorneys, prosecutors and judges who are willing and able to work round the clock to alleviate the legal challenges our Ummah currently faces or may face in the future.
We use the nation’s existing legal system to bring specific cases with legitimate causes to court with the goal of setting legal precedents or driving broader legal or policy change. We challenge corruption abuse and misuse of power where ever it may occur. We also represent and defend individual and institution defendants who are victims of mass incarceration, unlawful prosecution.
We utilize public campaigns, media, education, and lobbying to influence public opinion or policy, to raise awareness and mounting pressure on institution and their leaders for change.
We are developing an online and hard print journal of EMLA, which will periodically publish articles, research papers as well as books on the legal challenges facing our community. We will sponsor and promote new research and publications in addition to establishing a data base and link to materials published by others.
In our arbitration (ADR) centre, we will provide the public with less expensive and more efficient means of resolving their disputes. We will also strive to bring institutions together and foster a tradition amicable and discreet settlement of conflicts between individuals as well as groups.
EMLA collaborates with various training institute and educational institutions to provide its members with short trainings on contemporary issues, higher learning and post graduate study opportunities. It also organizes short term and long term trainings and curses for legal professionals, businesses and organisation.
