The Ethiopian Muslim Legal-Professionals Association (EMLA) is a non-profit civic organization established by a diverse network of Ethiopian Muslim legal professionals committed to promoting justice, equality, and rule of law. Conceived in 2015 and officially founded in 2025, EMLA has grown from a small group of dedicated lawyers into a national platform that brings together attorneys, legal scholars and others to address the legal challenges faced by Ethiopian Muslims and other vulnerable communities.
We engage in carefully selected legal cases that aim to set important legal precedents or bring about broader policy changes. Our team challenges corruption, abuse of power, and systemic injustice. We also offer legal representation for individuals and institutions facing unlawful prosecution or unfair legal treatment.
Through public campaigns, education, media outreach, and policy engagement, we advocate for systemic reforms and institutional accountability. Our goal is to influence public discourse and empower communities by raising awareness and promoting equitable legal standards.
We are developing an online and hard print journal of EMLA, which will periodically publish articles, research papers as well as books on the legal challenges facing our community. We will sponsor and promote new research and publications in addition to establishing a data base and link to materials published by others.
In our arbitration (ADR) centre, we will provide the public with less expensive and more efficient means of resolving their disputes. We will also strive to bring institutions together and foster a tradition of amicable and discreet settlement of conflicts between individuals as well as groups.
EMLA collaborates with various training institute and educational institutions to provide its members with short trainings on contemporary issues, higher learning and post graduate study opportunities. It also organizes short term and long term trainings and curses for legal professionals, businesses and organisation.
