Open Call for Legal Blog Articles
Background
The Ethiopian Muslim Legal Professional Association (EMLA) is an Islamic institution established on March 1, 2025. It was registered and certified on March 18 by the Ethiopian Islamic Affairs Supreme Council under certificate No. 100/68/17. The mission of EMLA is to defend justice, advance equality, and shape policy through rigorous research, strategic advocacy, and impactful litigation. Our goal is to empower communities, hold institutions accountable, root out systemic discrimination, and drive lasting and fundamental change. To contribute to these missions, EMLA is launching a blog featuring short articles and blog posts on legal concerns affecting Muslims. This blog will be published by legal practitioners, academics, students, and anyone interested in engaging in discussions and advancing research on Ethiopian Muslim affairs.
By launching this blog project, EMLA aims to strengthen the association’s research in various areas by collecting well-reasoned ideas from diverse individuals in the form of blog articles. The blog will enhance awareness of the rights of Muslims and assist in the empowerment process through credible knowledge sources. Additionally, it will foster wider Muslim community engagement to help achieve the association’s missions by creating a reliable and credible research platform. The blog will also enhance understanding of the roles and responsibilities of Muslim communities, institutions, and concerned state and non-state actors in ensuring the full realization of religious freedom for the Muslim community.
Content
The blog will publish articles related to the promotion and protection of the rights of Muslims from multiple disciplinary perspectives. We welcome contributions that scientifically analyse legislative, jurisprudential, socio-economic developments, and issues concerning Muslim rights and Sharia Law in Ethiopia. Submissions should demonstrate societal relevance, be supported by facts, present well-argued propositions, and ideally contribute new insights to debates related to human rights. The blog aims to cater to both readers with advanced knowledge and those with no legal background; therefore, posts should be clear and concise, avoiding excessive background information.
The blog will only accept original posts that have not been published elsewhere. However, once a blog is posted on our website, cross-posting or publication on other websites/journals may be permissible.
Contribution Guidelines
• Blog content should include an introduction, problem statement, method, objectives, findings, and concluding remarks.
• Blog posts should be between 700 and 1500 words and can be written in English, Amharic, Afaan Oromoo, or Arabic. Longer posts may be accepted in exceptional circumstances and in other languages, depending on the availability of editors for the submitted language.
• Blogs should be submitted in Microsoft Word format (Times New Roman, 12).
• Writers should follow uniform style for citations and referencing
• It is recommended to include hyperlinks to relevant legal and non-legal sources and background information. If referencing books or articles, please use footnotes.
• A short profile and contact information for the author(s) should be included with the draft blog submission.
Process for Reviewing Submissions
Each submission will be reviewed blindly based on the contribution guidelines. The review timeframe will be between three weeks and one month following the submission of the piece. The editorial decision may result in acceptance, rejection, or a request for modifications from the author. The decision to post a given contribution will be based solely on its quality. However, EMLA reserves the right to refuse publication of submissions that do not comply with the mission of the blog or the instructions for authors. For further inquiries, please communicate via the submission email.
Important Notes
• EMLA will not pay for blog article contributions, reviews, or editing, and will not receive payment for publication from authors.
